Should You See a Doctor After a Car Accident Even If You Don’t “Feel” Injured?

July 6, 2022 by Ryan Wechsler, Esq.
Pompano Beach Car Accident Attorney

After a car accident, you should always see a doctor as soon as possible, even if you do not believe you are injured. Symptoms of some serious car accident-related injuries may appear or may be noticed days or even weeks after the date of the accident. Seeking professional medical care as soon as possible can possibly even save your life. Some injuries, like concussions, may initially go unnoticed until it’s too late. A concussion is a form of TBI (traumatic brain injury) and should be taken very seriously.

In Florida, you have up to 14 days to see a state-approved doctor following a car accident.

After a car accident, you have up to 14 days to see a state-approved doctor; otherwise, your legal right to seek compensation can be affected. Personal Injury Protection (PIP) provides certain coverages for many common medical expenses incurred due to a car accident; however, you may be required to receive your medical care within a specific time frame.

Speak with one of our car accident lawyers to better understand what you have to do after a car accident.

What types of medical expenses are covered after a car accident?

The amount of medical coverage you are entitled to following a car accident varies depending on the severity of your injuries and the expected recovery time. However, here is a list of common expenses that may be covered:

  • Ambulance transportation
  • Emergency room care
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Surgical services
  • Primary care
  • X-rays, CT Scans, MRI scans
  • Dental services

Do people really not notice an injury after a car accident?

Many people are surprised to learn it’s actually common for someone not to realize they are injured right away following an accident.

Your body releases enormous amounts of adrenaline during a car accident which, in a way, can make you numb to certain injuries. When the adrenaline rush wears off, the pain can rush in. Whiplash, certain types of back injuries, concussions and some other TBI’s, and even internal bleeding can all go unnoticed after a car accident until the pain or symptoms increase. Because of this very reason, it is absolutely crucial for anyone involved in a car accident to seek medical care as soon as possible.
