Pompano Beach is a city in Broward County, Florida that is unfortunately riddled with crime. The crime rate in the city is more than twice that in comparison to the rest of the state, and there are four times as many crimes per square mile than there are in the rest of Florida. Disturbingly, Pompano Beach is only safer than 3% of cities in the rest of the entire United States. For every 1,000 residents, nearly nine will become the victim of a violent crime, and approximately 49 will experience property crime.

Top Crimes in Pompano Beach

94% of communities in the state of Florida have lower crime rates than the city of Pompano Beach. This is a frightening statistic, especially for residents. We’ve broken down the crime rate by type of crime, so you can see which you’re most at risk of encountering in the city.

1) Property Crime

The most common type of crime in Pompano Beach is property crime. This type of crime is broad and can encompass many different acts. Vandalism, breaking and entering, and theft are a few. There are two sub-categories of property crime: damaged property versus stolen property. If you find yourself the victim of any property crime, it’s essential to notify the authorities as soon as possible. Be sure to document any damages or missing items to report to your insurance company.

2) Theft

Theft is the second most common crime in Pompano Beach and can intersect with several other types of crime. Theft can occur as part of a property crime, robbery, assault, or what is known as “simple theft.” Simple theft typically occurs at a place of business, when an individual steals something like a watch or a piece of clothing without paying for it.

If you or your business experience loss as a result of theft, contact the police. Theft is considered a criminal offense that is prosecuted by the government. Again, document anything that is taken, as the value can affect a defendant’s charges, and your insurance company will need to know for purposes of reimbursement.

3) Violent Crime

Naturally, violent crime is something everyone is afraid of encountering. It poses a physical danger to yourself and your family, and it’s something you want to be prepared for. Violent crime is the third most common type of crime in Pompano Beach. It can include assault and battery, arson, sexual assault, robbery, kidnapping, and even murder. Violent crime may or may not involve a weapon, and criminal charges can result in either a misdemeanor or felony charge.

Violent crime should always be brought to law enforcement’s attention right away. If you see a violent crime take place, don’t wait or assume that someone else will notify the authorities. It’s an emergency, and you should always call 911 instead of a non-emergency police line.

4) Vehicle Theft

Vehicle theft is another crime that people may fall victim to in Pompano Beach, Florida. Whether a vehicle is stolen from your driveway overnight, or from a parking lot, it can be a very tough experience. People rely on their vehicles for work, to transport their children, and for personal errands and medical appointments.

Carjacking is another type of vehicle theft where an individual is forced from their car while it is taken. Both instances are criminal matters that require prompt notification of the authorities.

What to Do If You Fall Victim to Crime in Pompano Beach

If you find yourself the victim of a crime in Pompano Beach, Florida, the most important thing to do is to make sure you’re safe. Get to a well lit area, with other people around, where you can make a phone call to authorities as soon as possible. If you are injured and require medical attention call for an ambulance.

Notifying the police and seeking medical care as quickly as possible are crucial after falling victim to criminal activity. The more quickly police officers and doctors can assess the damage, injury, and collect evidence, the higher the chances are that the criminal(s) will be caught and held accountable for their actions.
